I’m very fortunate to live in a place where I am able to be outdoors all year long. Of course for many people that isn’t always an option. With summer just around the corner, outdoor activities are available to everyone!

I am an avid rock climber and mountain biker. In fact, I’ve already had 20 climbing days and over 15 days on my bike since April – Oh Yeah!

Being outside, enjoying my favourite activities, is what keeps me mentally sharp and physically strong. I remember back when I suffered with depression and anxiety, it was my discovery of rock climbing that lead to my ability to heal.

I suffered for many years with very negative thoughts running my daily routine.

Why do bad things always happen to me?

When is it going to be my turn to have something good happen?

Why does everything always go wrong for me?

Sound familiar at all?

As soon as I started rock climbing and mountain biking, all my negative thoughts started to disappear. It is a very addictive feeling when you find something that puts you in the moment and turns off the bad thoughts. This lead me to reprogramming my mind to the positive while simultaneously getting fit and strong.

Yes, nutrition is super important, but it is physical activity, enjoying a sport you love, that takes you over the top. 

What sports did you love when you were young? Is there something fun in your neighbourhood that can get you outside? How about joining a Dragon Boat team, a local walking club or finding a softball team to join?

Start small, get engaged, sweat a little and feel the joy of physical activity. Once you do, it will help you feel more alive and energized. This is how the momentum begins and leads to much bigger positive health results.

Starts googling physical activities available in your area try some out this week. Keep trying them until you find the one your love. I promise, if you do this very powerful self act of LOVE, CARE and RESPECT for yourself, an activity will show up to help support your desire for better health.

Okay, so now you are getting active 2-3 times per week. What should you eat to help support your thriving healthy habits?

Whether I am going for a long hike, climb or bike ride, I always make sure I fuel up before, during and after. This way my energy stays consistent throughout the day. Last but not least, you can never have enough water. Make sure you are well supplied and keep hydrated all day long. Being well nourished and hydrated are key to an awesome outdoor experience.
