Eat Nuts to Live Longer!

Eating nuts has some impressive health benefits, according to a recent study led by Jordi Salas-Salvadó from the Universitat Rovira i Virgili in Spain.

The trial looked at 7000 people between the ages of 55 and 90 to determine the effectiveness of nuts in preventing cardiovascular disease. People who ate nuts three times a week were 39% less likely to die during the study than participants who didn’t eat nuts. For walnuts in particular, that figure rose to 45%.

That’s a pretty compelling reason to load up on those yummy nuts – they will help you live longer!

Where to Begin

1. Go out and buy one or two of your favourite nuts. My favourites include brazil nuts, almonds, pecans and walnuts. Be sure to buy enough to last you a few weeks or even a month. I store any nuts I am not taking with me on the road in my freezer to preserve them longer. Remember, nuts are a living food and will lose more nutrients the longer they are kept out of the fridge or freezer.

2. Eat your nuts as a snack anytime of day, especially when you are feeling a little stressed or bored. Due to nuts amazing nutrient profile including protein, healthy essential fatty acids and fibre, you can expect to notice a steadier stream of energy within minutes of eating a hand full. PLUS, nuts will help control your blood sugar and reduce food cravings. Yes, even those nighttime sugar cravings start to disappear. SOUNDS GOOD? OH YEAH!

3. Start adding nuts into everything you eat. Most nuts taste great in cereal, oatmeal, over salads, in soups or even inside wraps and stir fries. Just add some almonds to the very next thing you eat and see how easy it is.

4. Get creative using nuts. This is the key step to maximizing the health benefits nuts offer and making it easier to eat more living food everyday. Getting creative with some tasty recipes using nuts will allow you to diversify your diet so it is fun and exciting to enjoy the health benefits you will experience. Here are a few of my favourite Power of Food recipes to help get you started.
