5 Easy Superfoods to add to your Existing Meals

One of the few taboo words I am not fan of is the word Diet. It’s a word that conjures up images of eating sliced cucumber and carrot sticks; one step closer toward pulling your hair out in frustration. It’s full of negative reinforcement in the back of your mind.  Let’s face it, diets suck!

Over the years building my business at Power of Food, I have come to the realization that if you restrict yourself from the foods you love, you will inevitably crave those foods more and more, to the point of relapse. Many of us have done it, and if you can say that you have not, I’d love to know your secret.  But for the rest of us who have trouble releasing those comfort foods, there is a solution and one of the key components to success with the power of food:

In order to make your habits more healthy, put the focus on what you add to your food instead of what you take away.  The rest will fall into place.

That’s it.  Just try adding one or all of these 5 Power Foods to what you are already eating to increase your energy, metabolism, regulate your blood sugar, and give your body the nutrients it’s craving.

1. Hemp Seeds

Hemp Seeds are easily on this list as a superfood and if you know my work, you know why.  If you take the politics out of hemp you are left with a plant that can do pretty much anything.  One of those “anythings” is help repair the vital building blocks of life.  Hemp Seeds (AKA Hemp Hearts) contain all of the essential amino acids that your body does not naturally produce.

In addition to being a complete protein source, Hemp Seeds are a great source of essential fatty acids, and have been known to relieve symptoms of eczema.

Another option is Hemp Seed oil, yet I believe that the less human touch between the food and your mouth, the better.  However Hemp Seed oil is one of the healthiest oils out there, and you should consider using it in place of other oils heavy in unhealthy saturated fats.

2. Flax Seeds

I like to think of Flax Seeds as a “toothbrush for your intestines”.  These seeds do wonders for your digestive health, and will help rejuvenate from the inside out.

Be sure to grind this slippery small seed for the best results.  If you don’t have a grinder try picking up the Cuisinart SG-10 Electric Spice-and-Nut Grinder, it works great and will for many, many years.

Ground Flax seeds are best kept refrigerated to keep the healthy omega 3 oils stable. A short list of the benefits of flax includes;

  • Reduces Cholesterol levels
  • Fights Diabetes
  • Fights Cancer
  • Increases regularity / reduces constipation
  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Reduces Menopausal symptoms
  • Fights Heart Disease
  • Increases Mood

Just add a tablespoon of whole or ground flax into every meal to enjoy their many healthy benefits and cleanse your body of unwanted toxins.

3. Unhulled Sesame Seeds

Minerals, minerals, minerals!  It is the minerals found in Sesame Seeds that put them on this list. The largest mineral benefits are iron, calcium. copper and manganese, which are all extremely beneficial in the metabolic process.  Copper also aids in the digestion of iron, something that is especially important in pre-menopausal women.  Manganese helps in your bone structure, as does calcium, yet another mineral found in Sesame Seeds.

4. Goji Berries

Goji Berries are great because of their slightly sweet flavour.  Whether you add them to your morning oatmeal or cereal, your afternoon trail mix, or even brewing as a tea, you will immediately find fantastic benefits to having this high antioxidant power fruit.

The health benefits are a mile long, but I’ll briefly state a few.  One is your immune system – goji berries are one of the best immune boosters out there and will keep you healthier longer.  Another benefit is that it increases fertility and sexual function, particularly in men… so it helps keep the world go round… much better than alcohol!

For starters give them a try in your morning cereal.  Not only will it taste great, but will set you up for better energy throughout the day.

5. Spirulina

Spirulina is actually an algae and isn’t much to look at really, but dismissing it and its benefits would be a mistake.  It can come in pill form and powder form, and can be mixed in with a variety of smoothies or simply taken with water in the morning.

It is certainly a power food, as it has a wide array of nutritional benefits.  It contains protein, enzymes, carotenoids, and even fibre.  This page can give you more information on Spirulina and what it has to offer.

If you do try it, please head on over to my Facebook fanpage and let me know how you used it. I am confident it will help boost your energy and make you feel super fantastic!

As you begin your journey to better health and abundant happiness, do not try to drastically change your diet. Otherwise you will likely lose momentum, relapse to your old habits, and abandon your diet regimen.

Instead, try adding these 5 Power Foods to whatever you are already eating, and you will instantly feel better from the work these foods will do to your body.

As always, please feel free to leave a comment below. Is there a power food that has helped you that everyone needs to know about. Let me know below.
